Today I caught up with the 4Kings Call of Duty 4 manager, Morg. This interview is mainly about the upcoming i33, the 4Kings their lineup and expectations, Morg his personal life and Call of Duty 4 in general.
Four-Kings.com: Hi there Morg, could you please introduce yourself?
Morg: Hello my name is Robert Black I am 19 years old. And I live in the sunny English village of Shoreham By Sea, which is about 5 miles away from Brighton. I currently manage the Call of Duty 4 team here at Four Kings.
Four-Kings.com: First off a bit of your personal life, what do you do outside eSports?
Morg: Well for a job recently I have been helping to run a friend of mines restaurant in Brighton, doing the accounts administration management etc. Other than that I like to spend time with my friends when they aren't at University, going out in Brighton. My other hobbies and interests include Sailing, surfing and my biggest passion Skiing.
Four-Kings.com: You recently made the move from infused to 4Kings as manager, how does your new home feel?
Morg: It feels good to be part of such a famous team; hopefully I can help Four Kings to keep growing long into the future.
Four-Kings.com: This will be the first offline event for 4Kings with this lineup, can we expect a surprise at the i33 and how did the team prepare?
Morg: I definitely think the lads can perform well at this LAN, and I know they are going to do a lot better than people are thinking. The team has been putting in a lot of hours since bringing in Vasquez, and watching them gel has been really satisfying. Leading up to the event they have really been focusing on all the maps that are to be played, getting effective strats and again working on the teamwork factor.
Four-Kings.com: You were admin at the CDC4 in Enschede not too long ago; will you be an admin again? What do you do as admin and how did you get to doing this?
Morg: I actually find being an admin a very rewarding thing, so I'm always interested in doing events. What it involves is essentially refereeing the matches that are being played. However depending on the event you are expected to do different things. Sometimes you might have to fix a broken PC or a graphics driver problem, and sometimes you will have to sort out match conflicts with accusations of cheating. It can get quite hectic sometimes! The first event I was an admin at was i31 after the manager of infused Adz asked me to help admin their CoD2 tournament. So it started then really and I have been doing events here and there since.
Four-Kings.com: There aren't as many top teams at the i33 as at the CDC4, but the prize pot is bigger, do you have an explanation for this?
Morg: Well in regard to the lack of top teams from Europe I would say it's because i33 is in the UK. So its a lot more difficult for Europeans to get to Newbury than it is to Enschede in the Netherlands. However due to the large prize pot, thanks to Multiplay's hard work in securing it, we have a lot more EU teams coming than for any other iSeries Call of Duty Tournament.
Four-Kings.com: Who is your favourite to take home the 6000€ at the i33?
Morg: Well I think it is still a hard one to call. The scene still has not settled down yet to have one dominant team, even if people think fnatic are that team. There are still 6 teams going that I think could win the tournament. TEK9, Dignitas, TLR, 4Kings, fnatic and Evil Geniuses – TEK9 are of course a huge Call of Duty 2 name and have tonnes of offline experience(par Kammyz) and seeing as they fared poorly at CDC4 I know they will want to prove that they have what it takes to win. Dignitas have had a recent line up change and with the wealth of experience in the side as well as being iSeries champions in CoD for so many events in a row they will have a definite advantage. TLR hot off their 2nd placing at CDC4 will want to confirm they are indeed a force to be reckoned with so anything less than 2nd place for them will be disappointing. 4Kings are of course here to prove to the community what we are made of and so I expect them to do so. fnatic will not settle for anything less than winning and with the experienced players as well as good current run they probably have the most momentum going into the tournament. Evil Geniuses are somewhat of an unknown factor in the proceedings but I'm expecting them to do really well here with some sick game play and awesome aim.
Four-Kings.com: What do you think about the current ruleset used for Call of Duty 4?
Morg: My feelings about the ruleset are pretty good right now for CoD4, it remains to be seen how the 2 Spec ops class limit will work in a competitive tournament. But I think we are pretty much now on the most balanced ruleset for CoD4 that we could have.
Four-Kings.com: You recently made the decision to limit the SMG to 2 per side. Isn't this a big risk as you are the first to try this out on a big scale?
Morg: Well the spec ops class has long been debated as an overpowered class/weapon. Having played about with nurfing the guns, especially the Ak74, to try and make the damage at range reduced we decided that it wasn't working and the best option would be to limit the class. The recent Level7 LAN in Finland was the first to incorporate the limit and decided to go with 3 spec ops classes. Reports from players have been pretty positive saying it made the game a lot more balanced. So i33 will be a bit more of a test to see how people react to the 2 spec ops limit. And then future events will be changed accordingly I guess.
Four-Kings.com: What do you think is needed to put Call of Duty 4 next to major games such as the Counter-Strike games and WarCraft 3?
Morg: Well to be honest you say CounterStrike games but I'd say that CoD4 is almost on the same scale as CSS now, especially with the amount of people playing it. The main thing that the Call of Duty series has always lacked to compete with CS is an in game TV. CoDTV is something that Infinity Ward has constantly hinted at, and we are told they are "looking into it." That and the continued support by Activision and Infinity Ward makes me think they are very serious about growing the game into the competitive gaming community and trying to make it compete with CS and the likes of WarCraft 3. But it's going to take some time to get the game to that level – some large competitions picking it up will always help, and with WCG's QTour picking up CoD4 as a 1on1 game as well as serious rumours about CoD4 making appearance at the Digital Games previous to the Olympics in Beijing this summer. There is definite hope for CoD4 as a heavyweight competitive game in the future.
Four-Kings.com: Well, this was it! Thanks for the interview, any last words, thank you's and shout outs you want to give?
Morg: Just say a big thank you to 4kings for making me feel welcome. I look forward to seeing those of you that are coming to i33 next weekend. And shout outs to PAL, plaZma, tidde, Mint and zai0s. Thanks for the interview.
